La Pharmacienne est un roman pornographique « pur et dur », où les métaphores sont bannies, les adjectifs concrets, et les descriptions méticuleuses sans être délayées. En outre, un humour noir assez décapant ne gâte rien à l'affaire. Les tribulations de Bébé, Laura Desjardins, Beau P' et son cousin Ernest constituent un vaudeville d'un genre nouveau, lubrique et facétieux. Gageons que sa lecture en surprendra plus d'un qui avait, sur ce type de littérature, des préjugés que l'actuelle liberté d'écriture a rendu désuets.
Le roman est suivi d'une postface d'Esparbec sur la pornographie. Romancier prolifique, Esparbec refuse avec horreur d'être considéré comme un auteur érotique; il se définit comme « pornographe à part entière ». Après avoir écrit près d'une centaine « de bouquins de cul », il a publié en 1998 à la Musardine son premier « vrai roman », un récit autobiographique : Le Pornographe et ses modèles. La Pharmacienne appartient à sa première veine.
